Innovation in Cologne Clinic: Treatment of the widespread male disease of "enlarged prostate" using the new BPH laser

For the first time, it is possible to gently remove prostate tissue without subsequent bleeding at the urology clinic of the Heilig Geist hospital in Cologne - follow-up treatment with minimal complications for the patients - centers for the treatment of benign prostate enlargement (BPH) using the LIFE laser are being set up nationwide

Jena, December 17, 2007 - www.biolitec.de - The LIFE urology laser of biolitec AG in Jena for the treatment of the widespread male disease benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) has recently become standard equipment at the urology clinic of the Heilig Geist hospital in Cologne. After the first few patients in recent months received very successful treatment at the Cologne clinic using a LIFE diode laser test unit, assistant professor Dr. Moritz Braun, chief physician at the Heilig Geist hospital, campaigned for the purchase of a unit for the hospital. The number of BPH patients treated should now increase to include men who were previously unable to have an operation due to other underlying illnesses. The declared goal is to establish the clinic for the long term as a location of innovation - in addition to numerous other LIFE urology laser centers throughout Germany.

The official kick-off for the use of the LIFE urology laser was at the end of November during a ceremony at the Cologne Heilig Geist hospital in which the clinic presented its technical innovations to the public. In addition to the new urology laser, the lately modernized endourological rooms at the clinic were presented.

The BPH treatment method using the biolitec diode laser will shorten the in-hospital stay of patients at the clinic. The method requires minimum recovery times and can even be used for patients who have to take blood-thinning medication.

The LIFE urology laser is excellently suitable for the removal of prostate tissue that exhibits a significant water fraction in addition to fine blood vessels. Due to its peak power of 300 Watts, the diode laser can gently "melt" the prostate tissue while at the same time avoiding subsequent bleeding.

Overall, a broader increase in cases of illness is anticipated considering the current demographic development - a full 50 percent of all men over 50 battle benign enlargement of the prostate gland. Thus, biolitec AG expects increasing demand for its gentle BPH treatment method - from patients as well as from urology specialists - which will allow the expansion of LIFE laser centers nationwide, primarily in metropolitan regions such as Cologne, to proceed rapidly.
